Myopia Control and Orthokeratology (CRT Therapy)

Although the outright cure for myopia(nearsighted) has not been discovered,we can now offer a number of treatments that may be able to slow the progression of myopia.  Currently, four types of treament are showing promise for controlling myopia.  The four will be discussed below in order of the most effective.....

1. Corneal Reshaping Therapy (Ortho-k) is completely reversible if necessary and non-invasive.
Corneal Reshaping Therapy (Ortho-K) is the best option to control Myopia.  This can be now done a new soft contact called MiSight that is worn during the day.
In addition to being a good choice for anyone who wants to see clearly without devices or surgery, it’s perfect for people with lifestyles where glasses or contacts may be inconvenient:
  • Young individuals with growing near-sightedness or myopia
  • Teenagers unable to have surgery (older than 8)
  • Athletes
  • People with allergies or dry eyes
  • Workers who sit in front of a computer all day
  • People whose glasses and contact lenses restrict their work life
2. Multifocal Contact Lenses: Multifocal contacts are special lenses that have different powers in different zones of the lens to help reduce near vision eyestrain. In several studies, it was found a 50-54 percent less progression of nearsightedness.

3. Multifocal Glasses:  Multifocal eyeglasses also have been tested for myopia control in children.  Although the results are not as impressive, they did find a signifcantly less progression, then those children wearing single vision lenses.

4. Atropine Eye Drops:  Atropine eye drops have been used for myopia for many years, with effective short-term results.   Unfortunately, after the first year of use, it is not effective.  Also the long term use of this medication is not known.  Finally, it causes light sensitivity and blurred near vision.  Therefore we do not recommend this option.
